The Lighthouse Network program connects neighbors with one another through block clubs in the effort to build community and increase safety of the East Phillips, Midtown Phillips, and Ventura Village neighborhoods.

“The Phillips neighborhood is possibly the most diverse neighborhood in the country with more than 37 first languages spoken in the home. Being involved in your neighborhood is essential to building intercultural connections. We have a communication crevasse because of language diversity and generational communication preferences but we must work together to communicate and understand each other better.”  – Kelly, Lighthouse Network participant

Block Club Leaders in Banyan Community’s Lighthouse Network, connect to people in their neighborhood that care for the community and are committed to keeping it safe. Banyan Community supports Block Club Leaders by:

  • Hosting monthly Community Conversations breakfasts to network, learn, grow, and share with other neighbors and community leaders. Durning this time block leaders and community members do most of the speaking informing each other of what is going on in their block and community.

“The Lighthouse Network introduces me to new people in my neighborhood. I learn about what is happening in my community and how my support can be most meaningful.” -Kelly

  • Connecting leaders to support, training, and assistance in developing community on each block through our Community Engagement Specialist.

  • Supporting leaders logistically with event planning, permit applications, offering reimbursement of supply costs, and creating flyers. Banyan particularly assists with National Night Out events.

In 2024 Banyan supported 14 blocks with a National Night Out party with a total estimated attendance of 590 neighbors.

The Lighthouse Network program is a vital initiative that fosters community connections and enhances neighborhood safety in the East Phillips, Midtown Phillips, and Ventura Village areas. By providing Block Club Leaders with resources, training, and support, Banyan Community strengthens these leaders to effectively engage with their neighbors and build a stronger, more connected community. As we continue to navigate the challenges of language diversity and layered systemic stressors, the Lighthouse Network stands as a beacon of hope, encouraging us all to work together for a safer and more inclusive neighborhood.
